Cassadaga and Lily Dale are Grant Recipients

The Village of Cassadaga and the Lily Dale Assembly recently joined forces and submitted a grant to The National Arbor Day Foundation. The grant was deemed the best application in New York State. The $1000 NYS Urban Forestry Council Arbor Day Grant was awarded to Cassadaga and Lily Dale as a kick off to becoming a Tree City USA. An Arbor Day Family Event was held on Saturday, May 18th at the Cassadaga Library which included crafts for kids, refreshments, and free saplings for attending children.

Lori Brockelbank, certified forester, gave a presentation on trees and explained how trees benefit us – shade, beauty, windbreak, privacy, cleaner air, less noise, less glare and higher property values to name a few. She also explained how to choose the right tree for the right place, and how to plant and mulch it.

Ms. Brockelbank addressed local concerns such as deer, beaver and salt damage. Soap was recommended to discourage deer and fencing around a tree to deter beavers. Some trees she recommended for our area that are resistant to salt damage are the Hackberry, Sycamore and Honey Locust. Invasive insects can also cause damage. Sightings of destructive insects such as the Spotted Lantern Fly should be reported to the DEC immediately. Job opportunities in the field of forestry were described by Ms. Brockelbank. Several of the attending Cassadaga Job Corps students were quite interested in this portion of the presentation.

After the presentation, the participants went to the Cassadaga ball fields and planted 2 Red Sunset
Maples. A plum tree will soon be planted at Cassadaga High School. Job Corps students planted 2 apple trees at their site and Lily Dale planted 2 Black Willow trees.

Many thanks to the committee members – Bob Reuther, Roxanne Astry, Rachyl Krupa, Krista Meyers, Peter George and Connie Dutcher. Phase 2 to becoming a Tree City USA is coming soon. This will involve an inventory of the communities’ trees and more plantings. Lily Dale and Cassadaga should be commended for working together on such a worthwhile project.
